March is seeing the first signs of spring. Below are a few ideas with links to crafts and recipes you can create with your children this March!
3/1- Happy National Fruit Compote Day! Compote is French for mixture and has a long French history! A compote is a dessert made of pieces of fruit in sugar syrup cooked in water and seasonings. The French believed that fruit cooled in sugar syrup balanced out the effects of humidity on the body. Initially served as a warm snack, during the Renaissance, it was chilled and served after dinner. National Fruit Compote Day
3/1-In Honor of Read Across America Kangaroo Kids will have Sparkee from the Somerset Patriots visit to read the children a story!
3/2 –National Read Across America Day – Falls on Dr. Seuss’ birthday. It is a campaign to help celebrate reading across America. Kangaroo Kids will be hosting special events during the first week of March to celebrate. On March 2nd in honor of National Read Across America Day/Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Can you make Cat in The Hat birthday hash browns to go with your green eggs and ham or a cat in the hat fruit kabobs. We have included some more cat-in-the-hat-activities for you to engage in with child for the whole week.
3/3 -On National Anthem Day the U.S.A. adopted “The Star-Spangled Banner” as our national anthem. Francis Scott Key, the author served in the army during the War of 1812. After a long night of battle during the war, he penned the lyrics to the song. Do you know how many verses make up the Star-Spangled Banner? It’s FOUR! I had no idea! 3/6 -Although unknown in origin, March 6th is National Oreo Cookie Day, do we really need a reason to celebrate Oreos? What is your favorite flavor? We, at Kangaroo Kids also use the Oreo cookie as a reminder of positive communications! Always start and end with the positive just like the top and bottom of an Oreo! In honor of National Oreo Day, can you help Mom and Dad make this No Bake Oreo Cake

3/14 Who can name the four parts of a butterfly’s life cycle? On Learn About Butterflies Day, it’s a great day to begin this study! (The answer is egg, larva, pupa and adult!). 3/17 St. Patrick’s Day is held in observance of the death of St. Patrick the Patron saint of Ireland! “May the wind always be at your back and the sunshine warmly on your face.” Here are some fun activities 7 Fun St Patrick’s Day Activities for Kids – Kid Activities and National Geographic. 3/30: National Manatee Appreciation Day Sea cows are considered large and graceful. These herbivores have been on the endangered species list since 1967. On the last Wednesday in March, we get to appreciate the calm herbivore who spends their days eating, sleeping, and traveling. Today, we appreciate the Manatee!
3/31 March 31st is National Crayon Day! Can you guess how many crayons Crayola makes a year? Have broken crayons and wondering what to do with them? How about these cookie cutter crayon crafts? Go check out the attractions at the Crayola Factory in PA.
4/1-4/5 Week of the Young Child- according to the NAEYC website, “The Week of the Young Child is a time to ‘recognize that children’s opportunities are our responsibilities, and to recommit ourselves to ensuring that each and every child experiences the type of early environment—at home, at childcare, at school, and in the community.
